Selenium (toning)
Instructions for use (paper)
Capacity
Datasheets (Kodak, Ilford, Labor Partner) suggests that 1000ml stock solution has capacity to tone 100 sheets of 8×10“ paper. From that, the approximate capacity for diluted selenium toner has been calculated and is shown below:
| Dilution | 24×30 | 30×40 |
|---|---|---|
| 1:3 | 18 | 10 |
| 1:9 | 7-8 | 4 |
| 1:19 | 3-4 | 2 |
Procedure
- Prints should be fully fixed and washed before toning. Alternatively, prints can be transferred directly into the toning bath from the (non-acidic) fixing bath, without prior washing.
- After toning, briefly wash the print in water, then treat with HCA.
- It is recommended to give the print a “full wash”.
Dilutions and times
General comments
For increasing D-max, with minimal tone change
KRST 1+19, approx 2-4 min. Prolonged times can yield a decrease in D-max.
For a change in tone
KRST 1+9, approx 3 min or more.
My notes
| Paper | Developer | Dilution | Time | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MGWT | MGWT | 1+9 | 10 | Noticable change in tone towards a cool brown. |
| MGWT | MGWT | 1+19 | 20 | Slight cooling of, barely visible. |
| Classic | Eco4812 | 1+19 | 4 | Slight cooling, deepened blacks. Beneficial to contrast/brilliance |
